Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover’s driveway and paver line breaks into three series that matter for parts compatibility: the Cover Classic residential paver system (discontinued in 2019 but still common in Campbell’s 1980s-2000s builds), the Cover Pro interlocking series (2015-present, identifiable by the “CP-” stamp on the paver underside), and the Cover Permeable line designed for Santa Clara County’s stormwater requirements. The Classic series used a 60mm paver thickness with a proprietary edge restraint clip that Cover no longer manufactures; we source equivalent-grade aluminum L-channel from our Belgard and Techo-Bloc suppliers that mates to the original bedding profile without disturbing the compacted base. For Pro series, the 80mm thickness and beveled lock edge are still supported, but the factory joint sand stabilizer (Cover calls it “Set-Lock”) has been reformulated twice, so batch dates before March 2021 won’t bond correctly to post-2021 product. Check the date stamp on your original packaging, or we’ll pull a core sample on the first visit and match it. Signs Your Cover Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pavers rocking underfoot or tire load. This usually means the bedding sand layer has washed out or the initial screed bed wasn’t compacted to 98% standard Proctor density. In Campbell’s clay-heavy soils near the Los Gatos Creek corridor, seasonal expansion and contraction accelerate the void formation.
• Edge pavers tilting or migrating outward. The edge restraint has either corroded (plastic spikes degrade in about 8-10 years in our climate) or the concrete haunch that anchors it has fractured from root intrusion or vehicle overrun.
• Weeds growing through joints that were previously clean. The joint sand or polymeric stabilizer has eroded below the 1/8-inch minimum fill depth, opening capillary paths for seeds and water. This accelerates exponentially once it starts.
• Standing water 24 hours after rain. The permeable base is clogged with fines, or the original pitch (typically 1.5% minimum for Cover systems) has settled due to subgrade failure. Campbell’s 2017-2023 drought-followed-by-deluge cycle has been hard on improperly graded installs.
• Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. Cover’s Classic series used a softer aggregate blend that degrades under de-icing salts or the magnesium chloride some Campbell homeowners apply after rare freeze events. The Pro series holds up better, but factory defects in the 2018-2019 production run show premature face delamination.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger here like a garage door spring, but there’s a costly mistake we see weekly: homeowners lift a few pavers, add bagged sand from the hardware store, and tamp by hand. The sand gradation is wrong (bagged play sand is too fine, it washes out in two rainy seasons), the compaction is insufficient, and the edge restraint never gets properly re-anchored. Six months later the repair looks worse than the original problem, and the full reset costs more because the disturbed base now needs deeper correction.
