• Hairline cracks radiating from sink or cooktop cutouts. These start at stress concentrators where the slab was field-cut without proper corner relief. In Campbell’s older neighborhoods near the Pruneyard, we’ve seen this on ADUs where the original fabricator used a 90-degree inside corner instead of the minimum 10mm radius Caesarstone specifies.
• Visible seam separation or lippage. The adhesive fails when seasonal humidity swings cause the substrate to move. Campbell’s clay soils expand in winter rains and contract through dry summers, so an unseasoned plywood base or inadequate cabinet bracing transfers that stress straight to the seam.
• Dull spots that don’t respond to polishing. This is usually resin burn from a hot pan left on the surface, or chemical etching from an inappropriate cleaner. Caesarstone is 93% quartz but the resin binder is vulnerable above 300°F; we’ve replaced three kitchenette surfaces in Campbell ADUs this year where the homeowner used a generic degreaser containing methylene chloride.
• Water staining or darkening at the backsplash junction. The caulk seal has failed and moisture is wicking behind the slab. In ADUs with limited ventilation, this accelerates and can delaminate the substrate if not addressed within a few months.
• Chipping at exposed edges, especially on waterfall islands. Impact damage from daily use, but also from inadequate edge support during installation. The 20mm Supernatural slabs are particularly unforgiving; we spec 30mm or a built-up edge for any ADU island over 6 feet in span.
